Certificate Course in Sinhala for Beginners

Title of the Course: Certificate Course in Sinhala for Beginners

Duration: One year, 5 compulsory course units, 30 credits

Minimum admission requirement:

(a) Completion of junior secondary level, which is grade 9 or an equivalent accepted by the University of Kelaniya.

(b) Elementary knowledge in Sinhala [either spoken or written] is not expected from  students.

(c) Candidates must be able to communicate in English.

Selection Procedure:

This course is highly focused on foreigners who wish to learn Sinhala. However non Sinhalese-speaking Sri Lankans also can apply if they wish to follow the above    mentioned course.

Aims and Objectives:

(a)    To impart a substantial knowledge in the dual spheres of spoken Sinhala and the

standard grammar of the Sinhala writing system.

(b)   To confer an adequate knowledge on important features of Sinhala culture.

Learning Outcomes:

(a) Students will be able to express themselves fluently in spoken Sinhala at the

conclusion of course.

(b) They will be able to demonstrate proficiency in standard Sinhala writing system.

(c) Students will be able to exhibit a substantial knowledge on important features of

Sinhala culture.

Teaching Methodology:

(a) Lecturers

(b) Audio – Visual technology and field trips will be made use of when it is

appropriate.

(c) Interaction with local undergraduates.

Assessment and Marking Scheme:

The whole examination will consist of five components as above and grades will be  awarded to each paper as follows.

Eligibility for the award of a qualification

(i) For the award of a Certificate, a student must

(a) accumulate grades of C or better in all course units aggregating to 30 credits

(b) obtain a GPA of 2.00 or greater, and

(c) Complete the relevant requirements within a period of three consecutive academic years.

(ii) For the award of a Certificate with Merit, a student must

(a) accumulate grades of C or better in all course units aggregating to 30 credits

(b) obtain a GPA of 3.70 or greater, and

(c) Complete the relevant requirements within one academic year.

Note 1:

A student who does not obtain a grade C or better in a particular course unit may re-sit the examination of that course unit in the next available attempt in order to improve the grade. The best grade obtainable by a student in this instance would be C. In the event a student obtains a lower grade while attempting to better the grade, he/she will be entitled to the previous grade.

Note 2:

Programme of study concerned may include additional requirements in addition to the minimum eligibility criteria with the approval of the University Senate.

Note 3:

The valid date for awarding any qualification will be the first day of the next month from the month where the requirements were fulfilled to award such qualification.

Note 4:

After awarding any qualification it cannot be changed and/or reverted back under any circumstances.

Aims of the Course: The aim is to familiarize students with the Sinhala alphabet, Words and its classifications and usage of Sinhala language.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course unit students will be able to;

1. Identified the letters and simple language structures

2. Write simple words using Sinhala alphabet

3. Expressing ideas using Sinhala

Course Components:

The Sinhala alphabet and phonetics

Classification of nouns

Classification terms - singular plural split, gender, time split

Synonyms, opposite words, honorific terms, prepositions and conjunctions

Transitive and intransitive verbs, active voice and passive voice

Spelling and punctuation, dialects of Sinhala

Language and communication skills

Aims of the course: The aim is to prepare students to function in Sinhala speaking environment.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course unit students will be able to;

1. Relate everyday experiences

2. Give self introductions and introduce a thing or a person to others

3. Recall and restate memorable events

4. Describe people or a place

5. Express opinions

6. Identify tone and style of speaking

  • Delivering speeches on general topics
  • Telling the time and describing places
  • Describing a picture
  • Describing yourself and your goals in life
  • Building up a story with given instructions
  • Narrating memorable incidents from the past
  • Listening comprehension
  • Presentations on given topics

Aims of the Course: The aim is to prepare students to identify the language in news reports, figures of speech and to familiarize with the format and language related to different kinds of communication correspondence.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course unit students will be able to;

1. Express ideas related to current affairs effectively in Sinhala

2. Relate newsworthy items

3. Identify language in news

4. Write short notices, letters, memos and invitations

5. Practice error correction

  • Identify relevant current affairs
  • Read and review short newspaper articles
  • Listening to local news channels and listing information
  • Writing letters of request, thank you messages, replies and invitations

Aims of the course: The aim is to develop students writing and reading skills with a focus on a different reading and writing patterns.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course unit students will be able to;

3. Explain simple procedures using Sinhala

4. Describe a place

5. Discuss simple literary texts

Aims of the course: The aim is to introduce Sinhala history and culture.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course unit students will be able to;

1. Understand the cultural and anthropological perspectives on Sinhala culture

2. Identify Sinhala folk literature and drama.

  • Concise history of Sri Lanka
  • Buddhism and its cultural impact
  • Sinhala folk stories and folk songs
  • Sinhala traditional drama
  • Festivals rites and rituals - specially focusing on Sinhala new year
  • Arts and crafts - Dagoba, Buddha statues, paintings
  • Hydraulic culture and concept of reservoir
  • Popular culture
