New Syllabi for the Certificate Course in Sinhala (Intermediate Level)

Title of Course: Certificate Course in Sinhala (Intermediate Level)

Duration: Six months, 4 compulsory course units, 30 credits

Admission Requirements:

a)      This course is especially prepared for the second year students of the Beijing Foreign Language Studies University in China who study Sinhala language as a subject. So an elementary knowledge in Sinhala is expected.

Aims and objectives:

a)      To impart a substantial knowledge in the dual spheres of spoken Sinhala and the standard grammar of the Sinhala writing system.

b)      To confer an adequate knowledge on important features of Sinhala culture.

Learning Outcomes: On completion of this course;

a)      Students will be able to express themselves eloquently in spoken Sinhala, and their presentation skills will be enhanced.

b)      Students will gain proficiency in the standard Sinhala writing system.

c)      Students will be able to demonstrate an adequate knowledge on the important features of Sinhala culture.

Assessment and Marking Scheme

The whole examination will consist of five components as above and grades will be awarded to each paper as follows.

85-100             A+

70-84               A

65-69               A-

60-64               B+

55-59               B

50-54               B-

45-49               C+

40-44               C

35-39               C-

30-34               D+

25-29               D

00-24               E


Eligibility for the award of a qualification:

(i)   For the award of a Certificate, a student must

(a)  accumulate grades of C or better in all course units aggregating to 30 credits

(b) obtain a GPA of 2.00 or greater, and

(c)  Complete the relevant requirements within a period of three consecutive academic years.


(ii) For the award of a Certificate with Merit, a student must

(a)     accumulate grades of C or better in all course units aggregating to 30 credits

(b)  obtain a GPA of 3.70 or greater, and

(c)  Complete the relevant requirements within one academic year.



Note 1:

A student who does not obtain a grade C or better in a particular course unit may re-sit the examination of that course unit in the next available attempt in order to improve the grade. The best grade obtainable by a student in this instance would be C. In the event a student obtains a lower grade while attempting to better the grade, he/she will be entitled to the previous grade.


Note 2:

Programmer of study concerned may include additional requirements in addition to the minimum eligibility criteria with the approval of the University Senate.

Note 3:

The valid date for awarding any qualification will be the first day of the next month from the month where the requirements were fulfilled to award such qualification.

Note 4:

After awarding any qualification it cannot be changed and/or reverted back under any circumstances.



Aims of the Course: The aim is to enhance the knowledge in the standard grammar of the Sinhala writing system


Learning Outcomes: On completion of this course Students will be able to gain proficiency in the standard Sinhala writing system


Course Components:

  • The Sinhala alphabet and phonetics, classification of nouns, [proper nouns, abstract nouns, material nouns, collective nouns, pronouns, honorifics nouns etc.]
  • Adjectives and adverbs, verbs, tenses, gender [masculine, feminine and neuter], case
  • Singular and plural forms of nouns, the person, subject and verb agreement
    • Prepositions and conjunctions, transitive and intransitive verbs, active and the passive voice
    • Diglossia of Sinhala language, the lexicon, spelling and punctuation, dialects of Sinhala

contextual varieties of Sinhala language

Aims of the Course: The main focus is on grammar structures which would be useful in everyday life and special emphasize will be paid to develop the reading and writing skills through a range of different reading and writing tasks.

Learning Outcomes: On completion of this course the student will be able to;
