New Syllabi for the Certificate Course in Sinhala for Professional Purposes

Title of course: Certificate Course in Sinhala for Professional Purposes

Duration: One year, 4 compulsory course units, 30 credits

Admission Requirements:

(a)  Completion of junior secondary level, which is grade 9 or an equivalent accepted by the     University of   Kelaniya.

Aims and objectives:

a)      The main aim is to prepare foreign workers and non Sinhalese-Speaking Sri Lankans to function in a Sinhala speaking environment.

b)      To equip them with an adequate knowledge on important features of Sinhala writing system.

Learning Outcomes: On completion of this course;

a)      Students will be able to express themselves eloquently in spoken Sinhala.

b)      Following spoken skills will be enhanced

  • Practice simple language structures
  • Relate everyday experiences
  • Describe simple procedures
  • Identify and practice politeness markers
  • Describe people and places
  • Explain simple procedures
  • Express opinions politely
  • Recall and restate memorable events

c)      Students will gain proficiency in the standard Sinhala writing system.

Teaching Methodology

a)      Lectures [15 hours per week throughout 24 weeks]

b)      Audio-visual technology where appropriate

Assessment and Marking Scheme

The whole examination will consist of five components as above and grades will be awarded to each paper as follows.

Eligibility for the award of a qualification

(i) For the award of a certificate, a student must

(a) accumulate grades of C or better in all course units aggregating to 30 credits

(b) Obtain a GPA of 2.00 or greater, and

(c) Complete the relevant requirements within a period of three consecutive academic years.

(ii) For the award of a Certificate with Merit, a student must

(a) accumulate grades of C or better in all course units aggregating to 30 credits

(b) Obtain a GPA of 3.70 or greater, and

(c) Complete the relevant requirements within one academic year.

Note 1:

A student who does not obtain a grade C or better in a particular course unit may re-sit the examination of that course unit in the next available attempt in order to improve the grade. The best grade obtainable by a student in this instance would be C. In the event a student obtains a lower grade while attempting to better the grade, he/she will be entitled to the previous grade.

Note 2:

Programmer of study concerned may include additional requirements in addition to the minimum eligibility criteria with the approval of the University Senate.

Note 3:

The valid date for awarding any qualification will be the first day of the next month from the month where the requirements were fulfilled to award such qualification.

Note 4:

After awarding any qualification it cannot be changed and/or reverted back under any circumstances.

Aims of the Course: The aim is to prepare students to identify the language in figures of speech and to familiarize with the format and language related to different kinds of communication correspondence.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this course unit students will be able to;

1. Practice simple language structures

3. Explain simple procedures using Sinhala

4. Describe a place

5. Express ideas related to current affairs effectively in Sinhala

6. Expressing ideas using Sinhala

7. Practice error correction

  • Explaining procedures to make a product

Aims of the Course: The main focus is on proficiency in spoken Sinhala language. It is useful for everyday life and special emphasize will be paid develop the various situation in spoken Sinhala.

Aims of the C10ourse: The aim is to enhance the knowledge in the standard grammar of the Sinhala writing system

Learning Outcomes: On completion of this course students will be able to gain proficiency in   the standard Sinhala writing system

Course Components:

  • The Sinhala alphabet and phonetics, classification of nouns, [proper nouns, abstract nouns, material nouns, collective nouns, pronouns, honorifics nouns etc.]
  • Adjectives and adverbs, verbs, tenses, gender [masculine, feminine and neuter], case
  • Singular and plural forms of nouns, the person, subject and verb agreement
  • Prepositions and conjunctions, transitive and intransitive verbs, active and the passive voice

  • Diglossia of Sinhala language, The lexicon, spelling and punctuation, dialects of Sinhala

contextual varieties of Sinhala language

  • Types of  letter writing
    • Personal correspondence
    • Business correspondence
    • Poster writing
    • Summarizing
    • Paraphrasing
    • Translations from specified and unspecified texts into Sinhala
    • Essay writing
