Guest Lecture Series: Internship (ENGL 41624 & ENGL 32044)
The Department of English of the University of Kelaniya relaunched the guest lecture series for the final year compulsory course unit -Internship (ENGL 41624 & ENGL 32044) - for the new academic year 2019/2020. Furthering to its aim to create knowledgeable, capable, and flexible graduates who can effectively respond to the requirements of the twenty first century, the course unit on internship has provided the undergraduates of the Department with hands-on experiences in a wide range of work settings including educational institutions, the corporate sector, government departments, the media, and non-governmental organizations. This guest lecture series will bring together academics and professionals through a series of workshops, discussions and lectures, helping the undergraduates to successfully adopt to a work environment while contributing to their interning organisations.
As the second session of its guest lecture series for the final year undergraduates, the Department of English of the University of Kelaniya organized a lecture by Ms. Manahari Panditharathne, which was held on the 10th of November 2021 via Zoom. Drawing on her experiences in the development field, Ms. Panditharathne discussed grant writing for development projects while explaining the job opportunities available for an English graduate in this field of work. Ms. Panditharathne was accompanied by two recent graduates of the Department of English, Ms. Anuradha Gamage and Ms. Santhusha Nawalahewa, who explained the ways in which the skills acquired by following a degree in English studies can be translated into the world of work.
The Department of English, University of Kelaniya conducted the third Internship Guest Lecture for the final year students of the Department virtually on the 1st of December 2021. The session was conducted by Mr. Shiran Manukulasuriya, former Chief Digital Officer of the Capital Maharaja Group. Mr. Manukulasuriya addressed the challenges university graduates face in seeking employment in the Private Sector and examined ways in which undergraduates holding a Degree in English can use their language skills to overcome the competition in the field.
