The English Department has always been a strong teaching and research department which is committed to the harmonious relationship between teaching, research and larger concerns of society.
The English Department has always been a strong teaching and research department which is committed to the harmonious relationship between teaching, research and larger concerns of society. It practices an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach to teaching and has absorbed changes that reflect the development of English studies around the world.
Thus, members of the faculty contribute to teaching by bringing in their multidisciplinary research interests into their English courses from such areas as European and South Asian Literature, Feminist Studies, Women’s Studies, Social Sciences, Critical Theories, Linguistics and Language Studies, Postcolonial Literature, Sri Lankan Literature, Diaspora Studies, Theatre and Performance Studies and Cultural Studies.
In keeping with the needs of the students at a professional level, the English department also includes in its curriculum, courses which are geared towards developing and enhancing soft skills, communication skills and professional skills which are on par with the overall vision of the University of Kelaniya. Ensuring that students of the department are employable has always been the commitment of its faculty. Graduates of the department have gone on to excel in journalism, advertising, teaching and the foreign service among many other careers.
In short, our concern at the Department of English is not only to teach literature as a passive reflector but as an active agent in the molding of culture, values, ethics and personalities.

ORIENTATION PROGRAMME - 2021

Dinali and Shashikala were invited to serve as resource persons at an Advanced Level English language and literature programme for students organised by the Chilaw Zonal Education Office from 12-14th July.  Together with DoE alumna Vaidehi Perera (formerly Santhanam), an experienced teacher of A/L English, they conducted five sessions at this virtual seminar attended by nearly 500 students from all parts of the country. The sessions were streamed live and recordings are available on the Chilaw Zonal English Channel on youtube.
The DoE collaborated with the Faculty of Applied Science of the  Uva Wellassa University (UWU) to develop their students'  language and communication skills. As an initial step, Dinali conducted two workshops for about 100 students of computer science and Industrial information technology on March 16th and 30th. The sessions integrated interactive tasks as well as self reflections with a focus on becoming autonomous and lifelong learners of English.  More programmes including a session on developing academic writing skills for the academic staff are planned as part of a long term collaboration between the DoE and the Faculty of Applied Science in UWU.
Dinali was an invited guest at the "In conversation with" programme of the British Council Library, Colombo, on 18th February, where she spoke about Sri Lankan English and teaching English in Sri Lanka.   This virtual session, one of a series moderated by Mrinali Thalgodapitiya and streamed live on youtube, drew a large number of viewers including many DoE alumni.
