A lively and insightful session on Paper Setting and Paper Marking was held on the 3rd of November 2025, from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., conducted by Dr. T.A. Pushparajah for the staff members of the Department of English Language Teaching.

The session offered a hands-on exploration of key aspects of effective assessment design, including building test papers with validity and reliability, creating integrative assessments, aligning test items with learning constructs, and marking with rubrics.

Dr. Raj’s engaging presentation and practical examples helped participants gain a deeper understanding of how to develop fair, consistent, and meaningful assessments. The session concluded with an interactive discussion, allowing participants to clarify doubts and share their experiences in assessment practices.

We are proud to announce that a TESL student from the University of Kelaniya, Ms. K. A. T. T. Wijayarathna, has been awarded First Place in the Social Science category at the International Research Symposium held at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (ISMYRU 2025).

Her research paper, titled “Investigating the Role of Task-Based Instruction in Facilitating Learner Autonomy: A Study on the Perceptions of Students at the University of Kelaniya,” was presented as an oral presentation and received high praise from the panel of judges for its originality and contribution to the field of English language education.

This remarkable achievement highlights the TESL student’s dedication to research excellence and reflects the department's ongoing commitment to fostering innovative scholarship in English language teaching and learning. 

Ms. Wijayarathna is currently employed at the Lyceum International School, Yakkala, and she is reading for her master's in linguistics.

We, the DELT, would like to wish Ms. Wijayarathne all the very best in her future academic endeavors. 

Ceremony of Long Service Awards and Vice–Chancellor’s Awards 2023

The Ceremony of Long Service Awards and Vice-Chancellor’s Awards at the University of Kelaniya was held on the 1st of January 2024 at the Dharmaloka Hall. On this occasion, Senior Professor Chamindi  Dilkushi Wettewe was honored with the Vice Chancellor’s Award for being one of the outstanding directors of the center/unit/committee of the University.
