Enhancing Teaching Excellence: A Workshop on Paper Setting and Marking

A lively and insightful session on Paper Setting and Paper Marking was held on the 3^rd of November 2025, from 10.30 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., conducted by Dr. T.A. Pushparajah for the staff members of the Department of English Language Teaching.

The session offered a hands-on exploration of key aspects of effective assessment design, including building test papers with validity and reliability, creating integrative assessments, aligning test items with learning constructs, and marking with rubrics.

Dr. Raj’s engaging presentation and practical examples helped participants gain a deeper understanding of how to develop fair, consistent, and meaningful assessments. The session concluded with an interactive discussion, allowing participants to clarify doubts and share their experiences in assessment practices.

TESL Student Wins First Place at ISYMRU 2025

We are proud to announce that a TESL student from the University of Kelaniya, Ms. K. A. T. T. Wijayarathna, has been awarded First Place in the Social Science category at the International Research Symposium held at Rajarata University of Sri Lanka (ISMYRU 2025).

Her research paper, titled “Investigating the Role of Task-Based Instruction in Facilitating Learner Autonomy: A Study on the Perceptions of Students at the University of Kelaniya,” was presented as an oral presentation and received high praise from the panel of judges for its originality and contribution to the field of English language education.

This remarkable achievement highlights the TESL student’s dedication to research excellence and reflects the department's ongoing commitment to fostering innovative scholarship in English language teaching and learning.

Ms. Wijayarathna is currently employed at the Lyceum International School, Yakkala, and she is reading for her master's in linguistics.

We, the DELT, would like to wish Ms. Wijayarathne all the very best in her future academic endeavors.

A Cherished Legacy: The Gift of Knowledge in Memory of Late Mr. Rusiru Kalpagee Chitrasena

In a heartfelt tribute to the life and legacy of the late Mr. Rusiru Kalpagee Chitrasena, a former lecturer at the Department of English Language Teaching, University of Kelaniya, his parents, Mr. C. Hettimullage and Ms. Priyanthi Mendis, have generously donated a rare and valuable collection of advanced English language, literature, and English language teaching books worth more than 1 million in Sri Lankan Rupees.

This treasured collection will be housed at both the Resource Center of the Department of English Language Teaching and the Main Library of the University of Kelaniya, ensuring that generations of students and educators continue to benefit from Mr. Rusiru’s passion for language and learning.

The formal handing over of the collection of books took place on the 13th of October 2025, in the presence of the Vice Chancellor, Senior Professor Nilanthi de Silva, and Ms. Gevani Prahalathan, the head of the Department of English Language Teaching. This meaningful gesture by the late Mr. Rusiru's parents stands as a testament to their son’s enduring commitment to education and his lasting impact on the academic community.

Though Mr. Rusiru is no longer with us, his spirit lives on through the knowledge he cherished and the lives he touched.

Ceremony of Long Service Awards and Vice–Chancellor’s Awards 2023

The Ceremony of Long Service Awards and Vice-Chancellor’s Awards at the University of Kelaniya was held on the 1st of January 2024 at the Dharmaloka Hall. On this occasion, Senior Professor Chamindi Dilkushi Wettewe was honored with the Vice Chancellor’s Award for being one of the outstanding directors of the center/unit/committee of the University. At the same time Dr. Ramani Jayasinghe was awarded for her 30 years of long service, and Dr. Romola Rassool was honored for 25 years of long service.

Management Capacity Building Program for the First-year DCFM Undergraduates

The Management Capacity Building Program, designed by the Department of Commerce and Financial Management, sought to impart mindfulness skills to undergraduates. Delivered through structured lectures, the program aimed to cultivate and sustain mindfulness practices, enabling participants to adeptly navigate day-to-day stressors, fortify resilience, enhance well-being, and augment overall efficacy in both professional and personal spheres. Crucially, the instructional sessions of the program were effectively conducted by the English lecturers of the Department of English Language Teaching who regularly conduct lectures for the Faculty of Commerce and Management Studies.
