Successful Inauguration Ceremony of Diploma in Buddhist Studies for International Students at the University of Kelaniya
The Department of Pali & Buddhist Studies, University of Kelaniya proudly celebrated the inauguration of its Diploma in Buddhist Studies for international students on August 1, 2024, at the K14 Auditorium. This event is a symbol of commitment to sharing the rich traditions and teachings of Buddhism with a global audience, attracting students from diverse countries including Malaysia, Vietnam, China, Korea, Japan, Thailand, Burma, Hong Kong, and Bangladesh.
The ceremony featured esteemed academic leaders including Vice-Chancellor Senior Professor Mrs Nilanthi De Silva, Dr. Mr Sudath Senerath, Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Senior Professor, Venerable Makuruppe Dhammananda Thera, Head, the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies. Distinguished attendees included Venerable Kamburawala Rewatha Nayaka Thera, Chief Incumbent of Scotland's Buddhist Vihara, and Senior Lecturer Venerable Dodamkumbure Dhammadassi Thera, Director of the Centre for Distance and Continuing Education (CDCE) at the University of Kelaniya, along with various academic and non-academic staff members.
The event also highlighted a compelling keynote address by Professor Wimal Hewamanage from the University of Colombo, who offered valuable insights into the relevance of Buddhist studies in contemporary society.
The program's coordinator is Dr. Amila Kaluarachchi, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies. The Department of Pali & Buddhist Studies looks forward to the contributions of its international students as they embark on this enlightening journey.
