IMSU 2025 – International Mini-Symposium for Undergraduates
“Fostering Buddhist Studies in Emerging Trends: Synergizing the Humanities with Technology.”
The Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies, University of Kelaniya, is honored to host the International Mini-Symposium for Undergraduates (IMSU 2025) under the thought-provoking theme: “Fostering Buddhist Studies in Emerging Trends: Synergizing the Humanities with Technology.” This annual academic gathering is designed to provide a platform for undergraduate students to present their research, exchange ideas, and engage in critical discussions that bridge traditional Buddhist scholarship with contemporary global challenges.
In today’s rapidly evolving world, where digital technologies and innovative methodologies continue to reshape education and knowledge production, the field of Buddhist Studies stands at an important crossroads. IMSU 2025 aims to encourage young scholars to reflect on how Buddhism’s timeless wisdom can be understood, preserved, and applied through the lens of emerging trends in the humanities and modern technology. By doing so, the symposium not only enriches the academic journey of undergraduates but also nurtures a new generation of scholars who are both culturally rooted and future-oriented.
The theme of IMSU 2025 highlights the growing need for interdisciplinary approaches. Buddhist Studies, traditionally grounded in textual analysis, philosophy, and cultural understanding, now finds fertile ground for collaboration with fields such as digital humanities, artificial intelligence, information technology, psychology, and social sciences. This symposium invites participants to explore how technological advancements can contribute to Buddhist research—for instance, through digitization of ancient manuscripts, use of AI for linguistic analysis of Pali texts, or the application of digital archives and visualization tools for cross-cultural studies. Equally important is the examination of ethical dimensions of technology through the lens of Buddhist thought, where principles such as mindfulness, compassion, and interdependence can guide responsible innovation.
IMSU 2025 also emphasizes the importance of creating a space where undergraduates can interact with peers across the globe, thereby cultivating cross-cultural dialogue. Students will have the opportunity to share their perspectives on Buddhism’s role in contemporary issues such as environmental sustainability, mental health, digital ethics, and peacebuilding. The symposium seeks to showcase how Buddhist insights, when harmonized with modern technological tools, can offer creative solutions to global problems while preserving the authenticity of the tradition.
By providing mentorship, networking opportunities, and a supportive academic environment, IMSU 2025 inspires students to cultivate research skills that go beyond classroom learning. It is an invitation to think innovatively, to merge the humanities with digital tools, and to carry forward Buddhist Studies in a way that resonates with the 21st century.
Ultimately, IMSU 2025 is more than just an academic event—it is a step toward shaping a scholarly community where tradition and innovation converge. The Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies warmly welcomes undergraduates from Sri Lanka and beyond to participate in this meaningful endeavor. Together, let us explore how the synergy between Buddhist wisdom and modern technology can foster new pathways of understanding, compassion, and knowledge for the future.
