Rice Distribution Ceremony 2022 Organized by Confucius Institute, another Occasion to Mark China - Sri Lanka Friendship

The year 2022 marked the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Sri Lanka and the 70th anniversary of the signing of the “Rubber-Rice Agreement”.

The Confucius Institute of the University of Kelaniya, organized a rice distribution program for the cleaning & landscaping staff, even in these difficult and challenging times, to mark the 65th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Sri Lanka. This event was successfully held on the 10th of August 2022 at 11:00 am in front of the K14 building of the Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya.

Senior Prof. Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Kelaniya, Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Prof. Dilrukshi Rathnayake, Head of the Department of Modern Languages, Ven. Prof. Nedalagamuwe Dhammadinna, Mr. K. K. Dharmathilake, Registrar, participated as the chief guests.

Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG) 2021 Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya

The Undergraduate Research Symposium (HUG 2021) is the fourth consecutive research symposium organised by the Faculty of Humanities, University of Kelaniya, aiming to elevate the much-needed research culture among the undergraduates of the faculty. The symposium was a one-day virtual event held on the 03rd of February 2022.

The symposium invited research abstracts from BA Honours first-year, second-year, and final-year students and BA second-year and final-year students on the all the areas of study related to the Faculty.

The inauguration session of the symposium was held from 9.00 am to 10.20 am on the Zoom platform and over 270 participants joined the session. The Keynote speech was conducted by Professor Emeritus R. M. W. Rajapakse of the Department of Linguistics. Dr. Sudath Senarath, the Dean of the Faculty of Humanities, was also addressed the gathering. The event was well attended by staff members and the students of the faculty.

The symposium had three sessions with parallel presentation sessions. The morning session was held from 10.45 am to 12.30 pm with ten parallel sessions, and the afternoon session was held from 12.45 pm to 2.15 pm with ten parallel sessions. The evening session was held from 2.30 pm to 3.45 pm with eight parallel sessions. A total of 131 abstracts from the given subject disciplines were presented by 155 presenters throughout the twenty-eight (28) parallel sessions, which comprised of 73 research papers in Sinhala medium and 58 research papers in English medium. Moreover, 45 Session Chairs shared their insight on the abstracts with the presenters. The symposium brought together many undergraduates who are compassionate on research to exchange and share their experiences and research results through both intra and inter-disciplinary research abstracts that investigated the discipline of Humanities in a dynamic way.

The Board Meeting of the Confucius Institute, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka was successfully held on 13th January 2022

The Board Meeting of the Confucius Institute, University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, was successfully held on 13th January 2022 in the K14 Faculty Board Room at 2.00 pm. It was held via the Zoom platform.

On the Sri Lankan side, Senior Prof. Nilanthi De Silva, Vice-Chancellor of University of Kelaniya, Dr. Sudath Senarath, Dean, Faculty of Humanities, Dr. Dilrukshi Rathnayake, Head of the Department of Modern Languages and Dr. Jani Samarakoon, Co-Director of the Confucius Institute at the UOK participated in the meeting. On the Chinese side, Senior Prof. Meng Dongfang, President of Chongqing Normal University, Prof. Zhang Lihui, Director of the Management Office of Confucius Institute, CNU, Mr. Zha Zhi, Director of International Cooperation and Exchange Office, CNU and Associate Professor Wang Jun, Co-Director of the Confucius Institute at the UOK attended the meeting.

At the meeting, Dr. Jani Samarakoon and Associate Professor Wang Jun reported to the Council about the 2021 work summary, 2021 financial affairs and work plan in 2022.

In his speech, Senior Prof. Meng Dongfang stated that Chongqing Normal University will continue to support Confucius Institute at UOK in its Chinese language teaching and cultural exchange activities, hoping that with improved Chinese language proficiency, students can have greater job opportunities in Chinese enterprises in Sri Lanka.

In her keynote address, Senior Prof. Nilanthi de Silva, expressed her sincere appreciation of the great contribution made by Confucius Institute at the UOK over the past 10 years in facilitating cultural and educational exchanges between China and Sri Lanka. She hopes that we will be able to put the pandemic behind us this year, and work towards stronger and closer cooperation between the two universities.

The Vice-Chancellor also extended a cordial invitation to all to visit Sri Lanka after the Covid 19 epidemic.
